With around 11,100 square kilometers, the Black Forest is Germany's largest holiday region. Around two thirds are covered by the Central German Uplands (Mittelgebirge), which give the region its name. The region reaches from the Rhine in the west to the upper reaches of the Neckar in the east. In the north, the region includes the cities of Karlsruhe and Pforzheim. In the south, the Black Forest reaches to the Swiss border between Basel and Waldshut.
